Prof. Hugh E. Huxley was born in Birkenhead Cheshire, England and at present Professor Emeritus of Biology at the Rosenstiel Basic Medical Sciences Research Center at Brandeis University, USA.
He was conferred the Albert Einstein World Award of Science for his contributions to molecular biology, notably his classic work in the field of muscle biology.
Prof. Huxley used a combination of X-ray diffraction and electron microscopy to define the structural basis for muscle contraction. He developed the entirely new concept of movement based on the relative motion of two elongated protein polymers powered by the action of independent molecular motors. The concept applies to a large number of cell motility mechanisms.
