Zurich, Switzerland, November 1990. The World Cultural Council presented the 1990 José Vasconcelos World Award of Education to Prof. Lev N. Shevrin, Professor and Head of the Chair of Algebra and Geometry at Ural A.M. Gorky State University in the Soviet Union. The Awarding Ceremony took place at the Eidgenössische Technische Hochschule (ETH) Zurich which acted as host for 1990.
The World Cultural Council granted the award to Prof. Shevrin in recognition to his more than 30 years of fruitful pedagogical and other educational work, particularly his literary work in the field of children’s mathematical education. The three remarkable books which Prof. Shevrin has co-authored. I. “Geometry for small children” II. “Mathematical ABC”. III. “Mathematics 5-6 textbook Interlocutor”, are widely popular not only in the Soviet Union but also in many other countries. Total edition has surpassed one million copies.
The Council also noted the academical status of Prof. Shevrin as one of the leading Soviet Algebraists and the Chief Soviet Specialist on semigroup theory, one of the main fields in modern algebra, as well as the fact that he published over 140 scientific publications containing important results.
Special note was taken by the jury of the fact that Prof. Shevrin is an excellent lecturer and popularizes his experience to many high-school teachers in many regions of the USSR. Among the courses he delivers are “A mastership of lecturer-mathematician” and “The psychology of perception and applied aesthetics”. Additionally he systematically gives lectures for school teachers and pupils as a visiting professor at universities and pedagogical institutes in the Soviet Union.
Prof. Shevrin was born in 1935 in Sverdlovsk. He received his Diploma in 1957 from Ural State University, thesis for Candidates’ degree in 1961 and thesis for Doctor’s degree in 1966. Since 1968 he has been Head of the Chair of Algebra and Geometry at Ural State University
